The Maldives has reaffirmed its strong and longstanding ties with Sri Lanka, describing the island nation as a “second home” for Maldivians while expressing optimism over an upcoming high-level visit expected to deepen bilateral relations.Speaking at a media briefing held at the Maldivian High Commission in Colombo on Monday (April 27), Chief Government Spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef announced that President Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka in the near future.
He noted that the visit, which had been postponed twice earlier due to Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka and local government elections in the Maldives, is now expected to proceed and further strengthen diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries.Highlighting the close people-to-people connections, Shareef stated that Sri Lanka continues to be a preferred destination for Maldivians, particularly for education and long-term stays. “Sri Lanka is often regarded as a second home for many Maldivians.
Over the years, a large number of Maldivian students have studied in Colombo,” he said.In this context, he revealed that the Maldivian government has requested Sri Lanka to consider introducing special visa arrangements for its nationals, aimed at encouraging extended stays and enhancing bilateral exchanges, rather than opting for alternative destinations such as South India or Malaysia.Addressing regional perceptions, Shareef clarified that the current Maldivian administration does not follow an anti-India policy.
He stressed that the government’s approach is guided by its “Maldives First” policy, while maintaining friendly and cooperative relations with all countries. “We are not against India or any other nation; all countries are considered special friends,”
