Colombo-based journalist Umair Nawshad has called for the postponement of the 36th Youth Sports Meet, citing concerns over inclusivity as the event is scheduled during the holy month of Ramadan. In a post shared on his social media platforms, he noted that the Youth Sports Meet is set to commence on 21st February, while Ramadan is expected to begin on 18th February. As the event coincides entirely with the fasting period, he pointed out that a large number of Muslim youths may be unable to participate fully. He emphasized that youth sports events are intended to promote unity and equal opportunity among all communities, and holding the event during Ramadan could unintentionally disadvantage Muslim participants. As Muslim youths, he appealed to the Minister of Sports and Youth and the Chairman of the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) to consider postponing the event until after Ramadan, in the interest of fairness and inclusivity. He further urged the NYSC and relevant authorities to give due consideration to the matter for the benefit of all youth.
